Five Reasons Why People Think Obama is a Muslim

by TheBlackGuy on August 19, 2010

Americans increasingly are convinced — incorrectly — that President Barack  Obama is a Muslim, and a growing number are thoroughly confused about his religion. But why are people all over this. There are five reasons why…

Nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, said they think Obama is Muslim, up from the 11 percent who said so in March 2009, according to a poll released Thursday. The proportion who correctly say he is a Christian is down to just 34 percent.

The largest share of people, 43 percent, said they don’t know his religion, an increase from the 34 percent who said that in early 2009.

Why on earth do so many people believe in this? The answers aren’t so simple. Consider our listing of the top five reasons Obama is under suspicious surveying.

5. His Name is Barack Obama For God’s Sake

Bill Clinton. George Bush. Thomas Jefferson. George Washington. Safe, Anglo-Saxon names associated with clean Christianity and apparent good will toward mankind was the norm for American Centuries.

Sprouting form the political garden like a rogue weed, Barack Hussein Obama, whose name rhymes and shares with the eternally infamous names Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein will forever be under certain suspicion.

4. He is Interested in Working With the Muslim Community

More than any President, he is interested in the welfare of the global Muslim community. Most telling was his hard line comments on supporting the bulding of a Muslim center near the World Trade Center site. In such sensitive moments such as these, he will become isolated for being partial to Islam.

3. He is the First President in the Prime of the Social Media World

In the world of 24-7 news, blogs, Facebook accounts and Retweets, everyone (including myself) are privileged to throw their opinion stones and their party of choice.

In a way, social media is both a gift and a curse to Obama. On one hand, without Facebook and Twitter, Obama would have never been President because of the viral positivity that spread during his historic campaign.

On the other hand, it is the constant eyes of criticism, nitpicking his every move and over thinking his every evaluation.

2. People Will Always Be Attracted to Conspiracy Theories

Don’t be fooled, conspiracy theories can have a valuable role in society. We need people to think “outside the box”, even if there is usually more sense to be found inside the box.

Studies have shown that there is a strong association between income and belief levels: the better-off are less likely to believe in conspiracy theories. Whatever the case, there is always a market for believers.

1. It’s a Slow News Day

Just admit it. No one is acting a fool today.

This has happened more often than what we think, even taking form when FOX News Pundit Bill O’Reilly admitted to crticising the Obama family vacationing in Maine because it was a slow news week.

In a world where people are addicted to the adverse, expect more crazy conspiracies and salcious stories to cover your computer screens.
