by TheBlackGuy on August 18, 2010

Douglas Perlitz, the Fairfield University graduate honored for creating a program in Haiti to help clothe, feed and school homeless boys, pleaded guilty shortly after noon today to one charge involving the sexual abuse of a minor boy. That’s not all. Hit the links to read the rest…

The stories surrounding Haiti are saturating with grief and confusion. This time, young men were taken advantage of. Fortunately, he is being brought to justice.

What happened?

Perlitz, 40, formerly of Bridgeport and Fairfield, received funding from the Order of Malta, a Roman Catholic charity and collected donations from wealthy Fairfield and Westchester County Catholics to create Project Pierre Toussaint, a three-stage program in Cap-Haitien, Haiti, the country’s second-largest city, to prepare abandoned boys for adult life.

He was arrested last September in Colorado on numerous charges of traveling from the U.S. to Cap-Haitien for the purpose of sexually abusing 18 minor boys. The case had attracted international attention, with Haitian Americans attending some of the pre-trial court proceedings.

This guy, Cyrus Sibert, a Haitian national and radio show host played the role of whistleblower, uncovering the lid to this sour story.

Perlitz will be sentenced on Dec. 21, 2010.

This just further demonstrates that not every program for our children are good programs.

Where are they safe? Who can we trust?
