Ron Artest Selling His Lakers Championship Ring!… But Why?

by TheBlackGuy on September 9, 2010

The LA Times are reporting that the ever eccentric Ron Artest, L.A. Lakers Champ and pro ball player will be selling off his championship ring for cash. Why? Is he in debt? Is he an idiot? The answer, might just surprise you. Hit the links and find out…

Ron Artest has been all over the news since he joined the Lakers last year. His basketball skills often overshadowed by his astounding antics make him a perfect fit for the Hollyweird city, overstocked with celebrity and free-spirited action.

Recently, Artest got into some trouble, getting pulled over for driving an unregistered mini speed racing car in traffic. Yes, we said it, he was driving an Indy car.

Now, he’s selling his championship ring… but the reason is intriguing. He’s actually going to be auctioning the money off for charity.

If you remember, Artest was the one thanking his psychiatrist, one of the more infamous and important quotes we will remember in 2010. Apparently, Artest thinks a lot of the profession, so the auction is for prospective students who are looking to enter into the psychiatric field.

NBA.com’s Scott Howard-Cooper reports that Lakers forward Ron Artest plans to auction off his championship ring. He then plans to use those funds to help pay for school costs for aspiring psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists. This is awesome in so many ways. It speaks to Artest’s randomness. It speaks to his genuine efforts in restoring his reputation. And it speaks for a good cause. I’d be interested in hearing from fans how much they’d be willing to spend to get Artest’s 2010 ring.

That’s definitely cool. Let’s hope it goes over well.
