The National Urban League Centennial Conference is Underway!
The prestigious and the powerful have convened in Washington D.C. as The National Urban League celebrates its 100th year empowering communities nationwide.
President Barack Obama is slated to speak at the conference this week, along with some of the most influential names in black America including Maya Angelou, Sheila Jackson Lee, Benjamin Jealous, Vernon E. Jordan Jr., Soledad O’ Brien, Reverend Al Sharpton, and Andrew Young. Hit the links for more information and why YOU should be there…
With names like Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, U.S. Senator Roland Burris and Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center will be hot with celebrity, integrity and power. But the sounds of high heels clicking and cards swapping shouldn’t burn you with intimidation. This is the perfect place to become empowered.
Esteemed Princeton professor Cornel West and Congressional Black Caucus representatitve Danny Davis are just a few names that will be present at one of the premier events for African Americans in the world.
Tuesday began as the Urban League kicked off a Centennial celebration that introduced themselves and their organizations with the statement, “I am empowered” statement. It was especially inspiration to the crowd but also serves as an official social mobilization slogan of the NUL, which asks “citizens across the country” to join in a pledge to achieve empowerment goals in the areas of education, jobs, housing and health care by the year 2025.
President Barack Obama will take a short trip to the center on Thrusday (right after his schedule “The View” appearance) as the conference’s featured speaker. He is expected to speak on education reform as well as discuss his signature program Race to the Top, a $4-billion incentive program to “encourage and reward states that are creating the conditions for education innovation and reform.”
The Black Man will defintely be there sometime this week. I encourage everyone to make the trip if they can. 100 year celebrations only come around but so often. It’s a great time for celebration, networking, education and empowerment.
